Community Medicine
About:
The Department of Community Medicine at Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College & Hospital (FAAMCH), Barpeta, Assam, aims to promote public health through community-based medical education, research, and services. The department is committed to addressing health issues at the grassroots level, focusing on preventive, promotive, and rehabilitative health care, with special reference to rural and underserved populations.
Vision:
To be a center of excellence in public health education, research, and community service, contributing to the improvement of the health status of communities in Barpeta & nearby areas of Assam at large.
Mission:
- To educate and train undergraduate and postgraduate students in community medicine, equipping them with the skills to address public health challenges.
- To engage in research that informs policy and practice in public health, with a focus on the epidemiological, social, and environmental determinants of health.
- To provide preventive and promotive health services to the community through outreach programs, health camps, and collaboration with government health initiatives.
Objectives:
1. Education & Training:
- Provide high-quality education in community medicine to MBBS students, emphasizing the principles of public health and preventive medicine.
- Offer postgraduate programs and training to develop skilled public health professionals.
- Organize workshops, seminars, and continuing medical education (CME) sessions for knowledge dissemination.
2. Research:
- Conduct research on public health issues relevant to the local and regional population, such as infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, environmental health, and health system evaluation.
- Encourage interdisciplinary and collaborative research with other institutions and government bodies.
3. Community Outreach services:
- Conduct regular health camps, immunization drives, and health awareness programs in rural and urban communities including school health services.
- Collaborate with national health programs to implement public health interventions.
- Engage with local panchayats, NGOs, and health workers to enhance health services delivery.
4. Public Health Services:
- Provide preventive, promotive, and rehabilitative services through the Urban and Rural Health Training Centers.
- Contribute to the control and prevention of disease outbreaks by offering epidemiological support and surveillance.
- Support government health programs such as Reproductive and Child Health (RCH), National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP), and National Vector Borne Disease Control Program (NVBDCP).
Key Responsibilities:
1. Education & Curriculum Development:
- Ensure that the curriculum (CBME) is in alignment with the guidelines of the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the National Medical Commission (NMC).
- Train medical students in community diagnosis, field surveys, and health system management.
2. Research & Development:
- Promote research activities in areas like maternal and child health, communicable and non-communicable diseases, environmental health, and health service evaluation.
- Publish research findings in national and international journals.
3. Outreach Programs:
- Conduct field visits and community-based programs to understand and address the health needs of the population.
- Promote health education and health-seeking behavior among the population through Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities.
Facilities & Resources:
1. Health Training Centers:
- Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) and Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) provide community-based health care services, health promotion, and disease prevention activities.
2. Laboratory & Research Facilities:
- Provide laboratory and research support for public health-related investigations and epidemiological studies.
Collaborations & Partnerships:
- Collaborate with local, state, and national health authorities for disease control programs and public health policy implementation.
- Partner with national health programs such as the National Health Mission (NHM) and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
Governance & Administration:
- The department is headed by the Professor & Head of the Department, responsible for academic, research, and administrative activities.
- A departmental committee oversees the planning and execution of teaching, research, and outreach activities.
