Since its inception in the year 2011, under the leadership of founder Dr. Elmy S Rasul Prof & HOD, Department of Microbiology which is a multidisciplinary unit consisting of 7 service laboratories viz, Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Serology and Immunology, Parasitology and Mycobacteriology has been significantly contributing to the health care services of Lower Assam. The laboratory facilities include state of the art equipments and conventional microbiological tools for diagnostic services. Teaching is an integral part of the departmental academic activity.

The Department also renders services of SA-ICTC laboratory for HIV testing, NTEP, Hospital Infection Control laboratory and Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD), IDSP, NVBDCP, NVHCP & VRDL.

HICC and Infection Control Team (ICT) were formed with ICO & Member Secretary from Deprtment Of Microbiology.

Post Graduate courses are conducted for award of M.D. degree in Microbiology besides the undergraduate courses of MBBS & DMLT etc.

The postgraduate degree course of MD Microbiology with three seats was permitted to be started under SSHUS by the Medical Council of India. The 1st batch passed out by May2023.

Department of Microbiology FAA Medical College is catering various services including surveillance samples are tested from OTs and ICUs of FAAMCH as well as from various private hospitals in BARPETA & nearby districts namely Bongaigaon, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Dhubri & Darrang under LaQshya Programme.

The laboratory facilities include Automated Blood Culture System like BacT Alert, Automated identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing system (VITEK – 2 Compact), MGIT for M.tuberculosis, Conventional PCR, Real Time PCR .
